Our Charity – Bear Cottage
Working in conjunction with the Pain and Palliative Care Service at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead, Bear Cottage is a medically supported home away from home that offers families both a physical and emotional break from the arduous task of caring for such a sick child.
At Bear Cottage these special children find love, care, laughter, fun and support. This holistic approach is achieved through regular respite, specialised camps, end-of-life care, bereavement support and much more.
When these families are told that their child’s life will be cut short, their normal everyday existence takes on a monumental change. As they embark on such a terrible journey, there are limited options available to help them get through each day and answer the many questions that may arise.
Having Bear Cottage available to them for care and support enables them to focus on the important things such as spending quality time together and making every moment count.
Whilst staying at Bear Cottage, families can do as little or as much as they like. Staff and volunteers are on hand to do the cooking and cleaning, allowing families to forget about the stresses of everyday life. Nurses are available 24 hours a day to administer medications and to offer support and guidance.
Scooter, the resident dog, is always around for a cuddle and the full-time play therapist, music therapist, and volunteers are there so mum and dad can spend time together or with their other children – often something that is forgotten when you’re caring for such a sick child.
