How To Market Yourself As A Coach

How To Market Yourself As A Coach

I find running a coaching training centre in Sydney so rewarding because by empowering more coaches to help more people, we move a step closer to making the world a better place one person at a time. It energises me!

But let’s be clear here, I started off making every mistake in the book! I lacked direction and often would become overwhelmed by the emotions that come up when you start to run your own business. My unconscious mind would take the path of least resistance, and that meant avoiding marketing and sales.

How can you market yourself as a coach?

Initially, promoting myself was terrifying because I felt I wasn’t successful; I wasn’t making millions of dollars, I didn’t have great relationships and my health was not the best. I thought as a coach I had to have all the answers and tell people what to do. This was the focus I had going in, and with it, I made every mistake you can make. This was reflected in my first years’ salary of $5000. I learned many lessons that year.

Meet New People

So often I meet people who want to become coaches, but they’re terrified of people! Fear of rejection will lead to working on admin, watching TV, or going for coffee with friends as once again, the unconscious mind wants to keep us safe so it will take the path of least resistance.

Safety and certainty comes from staying in your comfort zone. If there’s no safety or certainty in making sales calls, we’ll avoid them! By busting through limiting beliefs we can start to run towards the things we do want, rather than away from what we don’t want.

Tell Your Story

Your story is crucial to your ability to attract clients. I’m not saying you need to be an award-winning author, but you do need to be in touch with your ‘why’. Why do you want to be a coach? What challenges have you overcome to get to where you are today? What is it that drives you to want to help others to create change in their life?

When you know your why, the how just happens. Being able to meet a potential client, build rapport, and share your story with them makes you human and creates a connection. From there you will be able to set up a strategy session with the client having the belief that they can overcome their challenges.

Gather Testimonials

When I first started my coaching business we didn’t have platforms like Facebook to market or advertise on. After you have attracted a new client and helped them to achieve incredible results, they will want to help you grow your business.

As people can see you are helping others to reach their goals, they will start to understand that your coaching is fundamental to their success, and will want to engage your services.

But you have to ask. Live it Now is built on referrals and testimonials. Because people come out of a Live it Now weekend having achieved incredible breakthroughs, they’re more than happy to provide a testimonial and go back into their environment as raving fans who want to help their friends and family achieve the same results.

Give, Give, Give

On a daily basis I meet coaches who have no business, yet talk a good game. They talk about becoming a coach so they can work eight hours a week and earn six-figures. No! They’re making coaching all about themselves and what they can get out of it.

Coaching is all about the person in front of you. It’s about how you can help your client achieve their goals in the fastest way possible. Let’s make no mistake here, it takes hard work! In the early days, you need to be prepared to go without sleep, miss out on drinks at the pub, or watching your favourite TV show so you can give your clients an incredible experience.

As we say at Live it Now, ‘all I have to do to be successful, is help others become successful!’

Lead By Example

If you want to be taken seriously as a coach, you need to walk the walk. You need to have your own coach! By working on your own internal world, you’re continually growing, and your clients will be able to see the results you’re achieving and will be inspired by your example. If you’re not growing, you’re sliding, and your clients will outgrow you and move to a new coach.

There is an added bonus as well – having a coach is a great marketing tool. People around you often ask ‘what have you been doing to create such amazing changes in your life so quickly?’

You can answer, ‘I use a Life Coach!’

I created the Coach Now programme to empower coaches through having their own complete transformation, and teaching them all the tools required to achieve incredible results for their clients. If you’re ready to join one of the fastest growing industries in the world, I’d invite you to join us at our next Coach Now course!
